About NLR Sertoma

The North Little Rock Sertoma Club was started in 1946 as an offshoot of the Little Rock Club. Our focus at that time was rounding up and disposing of all the stray dogs that seemed to just magically appear in the North Little Rock area. Rumor has it that we fed them to the alligators that once lined the banks of the Arkansas River.

NLR Sertoma sponsored Faucette Park in downtown North Little Rock. We later sponsored the bandstand and its bell that is a focal point of the park. We also provided much of the landscaping of the park. This is but one of many of the projects in which we have been involved throughout the area.

At present, the NLR Sertoma Club is associated with the Arkansas School for the Deaf, in Little Rock. We provide funds to the school for various purposes, as well as provide scholarships to students who are pursuing college credits in teaching or research in hearing specialties. One of our main endeavors is to provide "loaner" hearing aids to students whose hearing aid has gone missing or is in need of repair. Without the "loaner", student would not be able to participate in classes. The NLR Sertoma Club has also provided sound systems for the classrooms.

This year [2009] for the first time, we donated to the NLR School System to help them in working with their hearing impaired students. We hope to continue with this program as resources permit.

Every year since 1984, the NLR Sertoma Club has worked with North Little Rock in putting together the annual Christmas Parade. This in no way furthers our mission of help to the hearing impaired, but is inline with our supporting the local community. We also donate time and money to other charitable causes as time and money permit.

The club raises its own funds, and all funds are used locally. There are few administrative expenses since all labor is volunteered. One of our sources of income is collecting the gate at various youth soccer tournaments held at Burns Park, an internationally acclaimed 1500 acre park wholly owned by the City of North Little Rock.
